What cake labels have to cope with

Cake Labels hold labeling on cake boxes and boards, frequently on a laminated or coated surface. That is the starting point for the specification, because laminated surfaces need a stronger adhesive than uncoated board. Tell us the box finish, not just the size.

In service they are used for bakeries and cake decorators finishing boxes at the point of sale.

Where cake labels are actually used

Cake Labels are specified for bakeries and cake decorators finishing boxes at the point of sale. Laminated surfaces need a stronger adhesive than uncoated board. Tell us the box finish, not just the size.

    • Bakeries and cake decorators finishing boxes at the point of sale
    • Product identification on retail shelves
    • Ingredient and compliance panels
    • Jar and bottle branding

    The substrate for cake labels

Paper or synthetic face with an adhesive rated for coated and laminated surfaces.

The options we would consider for this format are below; laminated surfaces need a stronger adhesive than uncoated board. Tell us the box finish, not just the size.

    • White BOPP film
    • Clear BOPP film
    • Textured uncoated paper
    • Estate label paper
    • Silver metallized film

    Printing cake labels

Frequently ordered in small quantities with variable designs, which suits digital printing.

Digital label press, Flexography, Screen printing for heavy ink lay are all available for this format. Run length usually decides which is cheapest: digital removes the plate cost on short quantities, offset and flexo overtake it at volume.

    What moves the price

Four things drive a quote more than anything else: the quantity, the print route, the board grade and the number of finishing passes. Dimensions matter too, but usually through how efficiently the shape nests on the press sheet.

Online orders on our standard build start from $0.30 per unit with free shipping. For anything beyond that build we quote, and if a cheaper route exists we say so at quoting rather than after the invoice.

    Finishing cake labels

Finishing is applied in the same production run, so stock is not shipped between vendors.

Each finish below is a separate pass on the press or the finishing line, which is why they are quoted individually rather than bundled.

    • Gloss laminate
    • Matte laminate
    • Foil stamping
    • Spot UV
    • Textured varnish

    Sizing cake labels

Sized to a box lid or a board edge, typically 2 to 3 in.

Send the contents rather than a box size. A standard label is used on a glossy laminated box, which is one of the harder surfaces to bond to.

    Holding cake labels before service

The adhesive will not key to a laminated cake box and lifts at the edges within hours.

Paperboard also absorbs moisture from the air until it equalises with its surroundings. If stock sits more than about six weeks in unconditioned space, a moisture-resistant coating is worth its small premium.

    Preparing artwork

Supply vector artwork with a clearly marked cut line as a separate spot color, and hold text 2 mm inside the die.

Supply a print-ready PDF or vector file with fonts outlined and images at 300 dpi. Our prepress team checks every file before a proof is issued. On a die-cut face the check that matters most is clearance between live copy and the cut edge.

    What we need from you

The useful starting point is the product, not the pack. Give us its measurements and the quantity, and we work the label outward from there.

A dieline template follows, sized to your product. Prepress checks your artwork against it and issues a proof; nothing runs until you sign that off.

    Testing the fit first

A plain structural sample is the cheapest way to find a fit problem — far cheaper than finding it across a full run.

Sample costs are normally credited against the production order.

      Answers

      Cake Labels: questions buyers ask

Specification, minimums and lead times for cake labels.

      Are cake labels food-contact compliant?

We specify food-contact compliant boards and inks where the pack touches food directly. Tell us whether contact is direct or through a liner for cake labels, because it changes which stocks are available to you.

How do you stop grease showing through for cake labels?

A grease-resistant coating or a greaseproof liner. Untreated board will always strike through eventually with hot, oily food — that is a property of the material rather than a quality fault, and it is inexpensive to design out.

How exactly can you match our brand color for cake labels?

On offset and flexo we hold the ink formulation, which gives a tight match run to run. Digital has a wider tolerance. If exact consistency across repeat runs matters more than short-run economics, we will quote the litho route.

What surface will cake labels be applied to?

It matters more than most buyers expect. Adhesive keys differently to glass, coated card, matte plastic and cold or damp surfaces. Tell us the substrate and the application temperature and we will match the adhesive.

Can you match the cake labels we already use?

Send the current specification or a physical sample and we will quote to match it rather than proposing an alternative you would then have to re-approve internally. Tell us the coating on the pack you are matching too. Grease and moisture resistance are not visible in a sample and they change which stocks we can quote.

Where do you deliver cake labels?

All 50 US states, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, on the same timeline everywhere: 3 to 5 business days of production after artwork approval, then 5 to 7 business days in transit. Every run is made to order and shipped directly to your address rather than pulled from stock, so you receive current production rather than whatever has been sitting in a warehouse. Freight is costed separately by weight, volume and destination. Roll-form work travels well and takes very little space, so freight is rarely the deciding cost on this format even at high quantities.

Can I order cake labels in a custom size?

Every run is cut to your dimensions — there are no stock sizes here. Send the product measurements rather than a box size and we will build the label around them, then send a dieline template you can design onto.

What happens after I approve a quote for cake labels?

We issue a dieline template sized to your product, prepress checks your artwork against it, and a proof comes back for sign-off. Nothing runs until you approve that proof, and labels then take 3 to 5 business days.

Can you hold our cake labels specification for repeat orders?

Yes. Once a first run is approved we hold the board, structure, dimensions, print method and finishes against your account, so a reorder references the same specification exactly rather than being re-derived. That includes the ink formulation, which is what keeps a brand color consistent between runs rather than drifting a shade each time.

Are recycled or recyclable cake labels available?

Recycled grades are available across most of the substrates we run for labels. Recycled content, curbside recyclability and certified compostability are three different claims though, so tell us which one you intend to print.

What file format should cake labels artwork be in?

A print-ready PDF or a vector file, with fonts outlined and any raster images at 300 dpi at final size. We supply the dieline to design onto, and prepress checks bleed, safe area and crease clearance before issuing a proof. On a die-cut face, keep live copy clear of the cut edge — a small amount of movement on the die is normal and copy set to the edge will lose it on some of the run.

What is the minimum order for cake labels?

A flat 100 units on any format. Most labels in this range are quoted from 100 units upward because unit cost falls sharply above that, but the minimum exists so you can validate a structure first.
