Pharmaceutical packaging is a controlled document

The question is not only whether the carton is right, but whether you can demonstrate later that the correct version ran.

Version control is the deliverable

For a regulated buyer the packaging itself is straightforward; the documentation around it is the work. Dated proofs, a named approver, a record of what changed between revisions, and the ability to reproduce all of that during an audit.

We build that alongside the job rather than reconstructing it afterwards, which is why it is worth telling us at quoting rather than after the first proof.

Barcodes and creases do not mix

A barcode that crosses a crease or a perforation fails at the scanner, and it is discovered in a warehouse rather than in prepress. Placement is a dieline decision made before print.

Send the symbology, the required size and the face it must appear on at quoting, alongside any serialisation requirement.

Specification

Choosing a Pharmaceutical Packaging Specification

Materials

  • 12pt SBS paperboard
  • 14pt SBS paperboard
  • 16pt SBS paperboard
  • 18pt kraft board
  • recycled CCNB board

Regulatory copy, batch coding space and tamper evidence set the layout before branding gets a say. Our guide to packaging board and film grades compares them on strength, print quality and cost.

Printing

  • Offset lithography
  • Digital press
  • Flexography

Run length usually decides this. Digital wins on shorter quantities because there is no plate cost; beyond that, offset and flexo overtake it on price per unit.

Finishes

  • Gloss lamination
  • Matte lamination
  • Soft-touch lamination
  • Spot UV
  • Foil stamping
  • Embossing
  • Debossing
  • Aqueous coating

Finishes are applied in the same production run. Each one adds a step, so we price them individually rather than bundling them into the base rate.

Applications

  • Shelf display in specialty retail
  • Subscription and gift sets
  • E-commerce inner packaging
  • Point-of-purchase counters

Most orders here come from pharmaceutical and supplements, retail and grocery brands.

    What causes rework here

Three problems specific to regulated packaging.

    1. Requesting documentation after the first proof, when the trail has to be built alongside the job.
    2. Placing a barcode across a crease, where scanners fail.
    3. Repeating a run against an unverified artwork revision.

      Pharmaceutical Packaging Questions

Can you supply versioned proofs with sign-off records?

Yes. Dated proofs against a revision number with the approval record retained. Tell us at quoting so the documentation is generated alongside the job rather than reconstructed later.

Can you guarantee a repeat run matches the last one?

On offset and flexo we hold the ink formulation and plate specification, which makes run-to-run consistency achievable within a tight tolerance. Digital has a wider tolerance, so we would recommend litho where matching is critical.

Do you handle serialisation or variable barcodes?

We can accommodate variable data on digital runs. Send the symbology, data source and placement early — a barcode across a crease fails at the scanner, and that is a dieline decision.

Can you supply leaflets and inserts alongside cartons?

Yes. Leaflets, outserts and fitted inserts can run with the carton so components arrive together and share one approval cycle.

      What tamper-evident options are available?

Tear strips, tuck locks with a frangible tab and applied seals each give a different level of evidence. Tell us the standard you work to, since the term is used loosely.

How do I register a specification for repeat ordering?

Once a first run is approved we hold the full specification — board, structure, print method, finishes and dimensions — so repeats reference it and nothing changes unintentionally.

How quickly can you turn a proof around?

Prepress normally issues a proof within one business day of receiving print-ready artwork. Where a documented trail is required, that step is the same speed but generates a retained record.

Can you match an existing qualified pack?

Yes. Send the current specification and a physical sample. We quote to match it rather than proposing an alternative you would then have to requalify.

      What is the minimum order?

A flat 100 units on any format. For regulated work the minimum mostly matters as a way to validate a structure before it enters a controlled specification.

How much does pharmaceutical packaging cost?

From $0.30 per piece at large volumes. Documentation and version control carry no separate charge, but a tighter colour tolerance usually points to offset, which changes the economics at lower quantities.
