Labels are an adhesive decision before they are a print one

Almost every label complaint we see is an adhesive keyed to the wrong surface or applied at the wrong temperature. The printing was rarely the problem.

The surface decides the adhesive

Adhesive keys very differently to glass, coated card, matte plastic, powder-coated metal and anything damp or chilled. A general-purpose adhesive on a low-energy plastic lifts at the edges within days, and no amount of pressure at application fixes it.

Application temperature is the second half of the same question. Adhesive applied below room temperature never keys properly, and unlike most faults this one cannot be corrected afterwards.

Sheets or rolls is an operational choice

Rolls are considerably faster to apply at a bench or by machine and are the right answer for anything above a few hundred units. Sheets suit very small runs and mixed designs applied by hand.

Tell us the application method rather than the quantity — a small run applied on a machine still needs to be on a roll, with the wind direction specified.

Choosing a Labels Specification

Materials

  • White BOPP film
  • Clear BOPP film
  • Textured uncoated paper
  • Estate label paper
  • Silver metallised film

The surface you are applying to. Curved glass, squeeze tubes and frozen packs each need a different adhesive. Our guide to packaging board and film grades compares them on strength, print quality and cost.

Printing

  • Digital label press
  • Flexography
  • Screen printing for heavy ink lay

Run length usually decides this. Digital wins on shorter quantities because there is no plate cost; beyond that, offset and flexo overtake it on price per unit.

Finishes

  • Gloss laminate
  • Matte laminate
  • Foil stamping
  • Spot UV
  • Textured varnish

Finishes are applied in the same production run. Each one adds a step, so we price them individually rather than bundling them into the base rate.

Applications

  • Product identification on retail shelves
  • Ingredient and compliance panels
  • Jar and bottle branding
  • Batch and date coding

Most orders here come from beauty and personal care, food and beverage, retail and grocery brands.

    Where label orders go wrong

    Four causes behind most reprints.

    1. Choosing a face stock for how it prints and not for where it lives.
    2. Applying a general-purpose adhesive to a cold or damp surface.
    3. Ordering sheets when the labels will be machine-applied.
    4. Sizing a label to the artwork rather than to the flat area on a curved container.

      Custom Labels Questions

      Which adhesive do I need?

It depends on the surface and the application temperature. Glass, coated card, matte plastic and powder-coated metal all key differently, and anything applied cold needs a cold-apply adhesive. Tell us both and we will match it.

      Will paper labels survive moisture?

Not reliably. For anything that gets wet, chilled or handled with damp hands, a synthetic face stock is the honest answer — paper wrinkles and the print lifts.

Should I order sheets or rolls?

Rolls for anything applied by machine or in volume at a bench; sheets for very small runs and mixed designs applied by hand. If it is machine-applied we also need the wind direction.

Can labels be applied to curved surfaces?

Yes, but the label has to fit the flat-enough area rather than the total surface. A label too wide for the curve will tunnel or lift at the edges. Send the container diameter.

      Can you produce removable labels?

Yes. Removable adhesives peel cleanly for a period after application, which suits promotional and seasonal marking. They are not suitable where the label must stay put for the product life.

Can I run several designs in one order?

Yes, and on digital there is no plate cost per design, so a mixed run of several artworks costs little more than one design at the same total quantity.

      Are your labels recyclable?

Paper face stocks generally are, provided the adhesive is compatible with the recycling stream. Synthetic stocks usually are not. If recyclability matters, tell us and we will keep to paper where the environment allows it.

What is the minimum order for labels?

A flat 100 units on any format. Digital printing means short runs carry no plate cost, so small quantities are genuinely economical.

Can you print variable data such as batch numbers?

Yes, on digital runs. Send the data source and the field positions early, because variable areas need to be reserved in the layout.

How much do custom labels cost?

From $0.30 per piece at large volumes. Face stock and adhesive move the price more than print does, and synthetic stocks sit above paper.
