Belly bands brand a pack without covering it

A band is the smallest piece of printed packaging that still changes how a product reads — and it costs a fraction of printing the pack it sits on.

Three jobs a band can do

A band brands a plain pack, holds two things together, or carries the information that changes between variants. Often all three at once, which is what makes it efficient.

Because it uses very little material, a band is the cheapest way to differentiate a range that shares one base pack — and the cheapest way to run a seasonal edition on packaging that is already tooled.

Tension is the specification

A band that is loose slides off; one that is tight tears at application. The dimension is derived from the object it wraps, including any lid overhang, and the tolerance differs between hand and machine application.

Send the item or its exact circumference, and tell us how the band goes on.

Specification

Choosing a Bands Specification

Materials

  • Uncoated text paper
  • C1S paperboard
  • Recycled kraft paper
  • Coated art paper

Band width relative to pack height. Too narrow looks like an afterthought; too wide hides the product. Our guide to packaging board and film grades compares them on strength, print quality and cost.

Printing

  • Offset lithography
  • Digital press

Run length usually decides this. Digital wins on shorter quantities because there is no plate cost; beyond that, offset and flexo overtake it on price per unit.

Finishes

  • Matte lamination
  • Uncoated natural
  • Foil stamping
  • Spot UV

Finishes are applied in the same production run. Each one adds a step, so we price them individually rather than bundling them into the base rate.

Applications

  • Retail pack branding
  • Gift set presentation
  • Subscription boxes
  • Product bundling

Most orders here come from gifting and events, retail and grocery, e-commerce and dtc brands.

      Custom Bands Questions

      What is a belly band?

A printed strip that wraps around the middle of a box, tray or set of items. It brands the pack, can hold components together, and carries information that changes between variants — without covering the pack itself.

How do I measure for a band?

The circumference of the object it wraps, including any lid overhang, plus an overlap for the seam. Tell us whether it is applied by hand or machine, because the tolerance differs.

Will the band stay in place?

A correctly sized one will. If the pack ships loose inside a carton we would usually recommend a light adhesive spot to stop the band migrating in transit.

Can a band hold two items together?

Yes, and it is a common use — a bundled pair or a product with a leaflet. The band then carries a small load, so we specify a slightly heavier stock than for branding alone.

Are bands cheaper than printing the pack?

Considerably, especially across variants. You print a small strip per variant rather than a whole pack, which moves the setup cost onto much less material.

What material are bands made from?

Usually a lighter board or heavy paper, since the band carries little or no load. Kraft, coated board and uncoated stocks are all used.

      Can bands be recycled?

Paper and board bands generally are, provided there is no plastic laminate. Since the band is a separate component, it can be recycled independently of the pack it wraps.

What is the minimum order for bands?

A flat 100 units on any format. Because bands use so little material, short runs are relatively economical.

Can I run several band designs in one order?

Yes, and it is the main reason to choose bands. On digital there is no plate cost per design, so several artworks cost little more than one.

How much do custom bands cost?

From $0.30 per piece at large volumes, and typically the lowest cost per unit of anything we produce because of how little material is involved.
