Recycled content, kerbside recyclability and certified compostability are three different claims requiring three different kinds of evidence. Brands get into trouble by treating them as one.
Tell us which claim you intend to print on the pack and we will specify a material that supports it, or say plainly that it does not exist at your price point.
Compostable Stand Up Pouches hold retail product for brands whose end-of-life claim is central to the proposition. That is the starting point for the specification, because buy in smaller, more frequent batches than you would a conventional laminate. Shelf life of the empty pouch is a real constraint.
In service they are used for brands where compostability is a genuine commitment rather than a badge.
Compostable Stand Up Pouches are specified for brands where compostability is a genuine commitment rather than a badge. Buy in smaller, more frequent batches than you would a conventional laminate. Shelf life of the empty pouch is a real constraint.
Shelf presence is decided at arm's length, not close up. Contrast, the front panel hierarchy and how the pack sits next to competitors matter more than a finish that only reads in the hand.
If compostable stand up pouches will be faced on a shelf, tell us the facing orientation so the strongest panel is the one the customer sees.
Certified compostable film — almost always industrially compostable rather than home compostable, and that must be stated.
The options we would consider for this format are below; buy in smaller, more frequent batches than you would a conventional laminate. Shelf life of the empty pouch is a real constraint.
The film degrades in storage. Compostable material begins breaking down given warmth and humidity, so old stock can fail.
Paperboard also absorbs moisture from the air until it equalises with its surroundings. If stock sits more than about six weeks in unconditioned space, a moisture-resistant coating is worth its small premium.
The honest trade-offs between the stocks we would consider for this format.
| Material | Barrier | Recovery route |
|---|---|---|
| Uncoated kraft | None | Dry goods, short shelf life |
| Aqueous coated | Light moisture | Keeps paper recyclable |
| Foil laminate | Oxygen and moisture | Longest shelf life, not kerbside recyclable |
| Mono-material film | Good, shorter life | Store drop-off recycling |
Compostable films have a wider colour tolerance than conventional laminates. Approve a printed sample if colour is critical.
Rotogravure, Digital film printing, Flexography are all available for this format. Run length usually decides which is cheapest: digital removes the plate cost on short quantities, offset and flexo overtake it at volume.
Retail sizes, though compostable films are slightly less strong at equivalent gauges.
Send the contents rather than a box size. A year of stock is ordered for the unit price, and the last months of it are brittle before they are used.
The useful starting point is the product, not the pack. Give us its measurements and the quantity, and we work the pouch outward from there.
A dieline template follows, sized to your product. Prepress checks your artwork against it and issues a proof; nothing runs until you sign that off.
Ask for an unprinted sample if the question is fit, or a printed prototype if the question is colour. They answer different things.
Sample costs are normally credited against the production order.

Specification, minimums and lead times for compostable stand up pouches.
They can. The film starts degrading given warmth and humidity, so a year of stock may be brittle by the end. Order in smaller, more frequent batches than you would a conventional laminate.
Slightly, at the same caliper — recycled fibres are shorter, so the board is a little less stiff and takes on moisture a little faster. Stepping up one caliper generally restores the performance while keeping the recycled claim intact.
We can state the recycled content of the board and supply the mill documentation behind it. We do not issue certifications ourselves, and we would rather give you the underlying evidence than a claim you cannot substantiate.
Along a designed perforation, which is the hardest part of the structure to get right. Too weak and it fails in transit; too strong and store staff tear it badly. It is decided at dieline stage, and we recommend a sample before committing.
If you are supplying a grocery chain, almost certainly. Case dimensions, pallet pattern and barcode placement are usually published and non-negotiable. Send the requirement and we will design inward from it.
It depends on shelf life and what degrades the product — oxygen, moisture or light. A higher barrier costs more and is usually harder to recycle, so the right answer is the lowest barrier that holds your product for as long as it needs to.
Not currently, and it is better to be straight about it. Multi-layer laminates block best precisely because they combine materials, which is what makes them hard to recycle. Mono-material films are recyclable through store drop-off but give a shorter shelf life.
Both are standard options. A zip suits anything the customer opens repeatedly; a one-way valve is for products that off-gas, such as freshly roasted coffee, where a sealed bag would otherwise inflate.
Send the current specification or a physical sample and we will quote to match it rather than proposing an alternative you would then have to re-approve internally. A physical sample tells us more than a specification sheet — board caliper and coating are usually described loosely and measured exactly.
All 50 US states, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, on the same timeline everywhere: 3 to 5 business days of production after artwork approval, then 5 to 7 business days in transit. Every run is made to order and shipped directly to your address rather than pulled from stock, so you receive current production rather than whatever has been sitting in a warehouse. Freight is costed separately by weight, volume and destination. This format nests or lies flat, so a large quantity takes up far less freight volume than the finished pack suggests.
Every run is cut to your dimensions — there are no stock sizes here. Send the product measurements rather than a box size and we will build the pouch around them, then send a dieline template you can design onto.
We issue a dieline template sized to your product, prepress checks your artwork against it, and a proof comes back for sign-off. Nothing runs until you approve that proof, and pouches then take 3 to 5 business days.
