What custom tote bags have to cope with

Custom Tote Bags hold a reusable carrier bought as a brand item rather than a transaction carrier. That is the starting point for the specification, because handle attachment is the specification that matters. A cross-stitched or box-stitched join outlasts a simple seam by a wide margin.

In service they are used for merchandise, events and retail where the bag is expected to be used for years.

    Presentation on the shelf

Shelf presence is decided at arm's length, not close up. Contrast, the front panel hierarchy and how the pack sits next to competitors matter more than a finish that only reads in the hand.

If custom tote bags will be faced on a shelf, tell us the facing orientation so the strongest panel is the one the customer sees.

Where custom tote bags are actually used

Custom Tote Bags are specified for merchandise, events and retail where the bag is expected to be used for years. Handle attachment is the specification that matters. A cross-stitched or box-stitched join outlasts a simple seam by a wide margin.

    • Merchandise, events and retail where the bag is expected to be used for years
    • Retail carry bags
    • Conference and event merchandise
    • Grocery and market use

The substrate for custom tote bags

8–12oz cotton for durability; lighter weights suit giveaways where longevity is not the point.

The options we would consider for this format are below; handle attachment is the specification that matters. A cross-stitched or box-stitched join outlasts a simple seam by a wide margin.

    • Cotton canvas 8oz
    • Cotton canvas 12oz
    • Organic cotton
    • Jute with laminated lining
    • Non-woven polypropylene

    Printing custom tote bags

Screen print for volume and durability, DTG for short runs and photographic artwork. Screen holds up far better to washing.

Screen printing, Direct-to-garment printing, Embroidery, Heat transfer are all available for this format. Run length usually decides which is cheapest: digital removes the plate cost on short quantities, offset and flexo overtake it at volume.

    Finishing custom tote bags

Screen print for volume and durability, DTG for short runs and photographic artwork. Screen holds up far better to washing.

The finishes below are quoted line by line. Each is an additional pass, so dropping one is a real saving rather than a rounding difference.

    • Natural unbleached
    • Pigment dyed
    • Embroidered detail

    Sizing custom tote bags

Commonly 15 × 16 in with a 3–5 in gusset, and handle length chosen for shoulder or hand carry.

Send the contents rather than a box size. Fabric weight is compared between quotes while the handle attachment — which is what fails — is never specified.

    Getting artwork press-ready

Screen printing needs vector artwork with separated spot colours. Each additional colour adds a screen and a small setup cost.

Supply a print-ready PDF or vector file with fonts outlined and images at 300 dpi. Our prepress team checks every file before a proof is issued. The check that catches most files is type sitting too close to a crease, which is easier to move at layout than at proof.

    What we need from you

The useful starting point is the product, not the pack. Give us its measurements and the quantity, and we work the tote bag outward from there.

A dieline template follows, sized to your product. Prepress checks your artwork against it and issues a proof; nothing runs until you sign that off.

    Checking it before you commit

We can produce a plain unprinted sample so you can check the fit and structure of custom tote bags before committing.

Sample costs are normally credited against the production order.

      In practice

What you get with this format

      The dimensions that matter

Commonly 15 × 16 in with a 3–5 in gusset, and handle length chosen for shoulder or hand carry.

      The failure we design out

The handle stitching pulls out of the body under a heavy load, because the stress is concentrated at two points.

      Where it has to work

Specified for merchandise, events and retail where the bag is expected to be used for years.

      What decides the job

Handle attachment is the specification that matters. A cross-stitched or box-stitched join outlasts a simple seam by a wide margin.

This format sits in our custom bags range, alongside 26 other made-to-order formats.

      Answers

Ordering custom tote bags: the usual questions

Specification, minimums and lead times for custom tote bags.

Why do tote bag handles pull off?

The stress concentrates at two small joins. A box-stitch or cross-stitch attachment spreads it and lasts far longer than a simple seam — it is worth specifying explicitly, because it rarely appears on a quote.

How exactly can you match our brand colour?

On offset and flexo we hold the ink formulation, which gives a tight match run to run. Digital has a wider tolerance. If exact consistency across repeat runs matters more than short-run economics, we will quote the litho route.

Which handle type should I choose?

It depends on the load, not the look. Twisted paper handles suit light contents; flat paper is stronger for the same cost; cotton rope carries the most and reads as the most premium. Above a few kilos the failure point is usually the bag tearing at the handle, so a reinforced top edge matters as much as the handle itself.

How much weight will they carry?

That is set by the paper weight and the top-edge reinforcement together rather than by the handle alone. Tell us the heaviest thing you will put in custom tote bags and we will specify to it rather than to an average.

What happens after I approve the quote?

We issue a dieline template sized to your product, prepress checks your artwork against it, and a proof comes back for sign-off. Nothing runs until you approve that proof, and tote bags then take 3 to 5 business days.

Can you hold the specification for repeat orders?

Yes. Once a first run is approved we hold the board, structure, dimensions, print method and finishes against your account, so a reorder references the same specification exactly rather than being re-derived. That includes the ink formulation, which is what keeps a brand colour consistent between runs rather than drifting a shade each time.

Do you offer recycled or recyclable options?

Recycled grades are available across most of the substrates we run for tote bags. Recycled content, kerbside recyclability and certified compostability are three different claims though, so tell us which one you intend to print.

What file format should I send artwork in?

A print-ready PDF or a vector file, with fonts outlined and any raster images at 300 dpi at final size. We supply the dieline to design onto, and prepress checks bleed, safe area and crease clearance before issuing a proof. The dieline we supply carries the crease positions, so keeping type clear of a crease is easier to solve at layout than at proof.

What is the minimum order for custom tote bags?

A flat 100 units on any format. Most tote bags in this range are quoted from 100 units upward because unit cost falls sharply above that, but the minimum exists so you can validate a structure first.

How long do custom tote bags take to produce?

3 to 5 business days after artwork approval, plus freight. Tote bag runs with applied finishes can take longer because each finish is a separate pass, and we confirm a firm date in writing with the quote.

What do custom tote bags cost?

Prices start from $0.30 per piece for large-volume orders. For this format the biggest levers are quantity, print route, board grade and how many finishing passes are involved. We quote each element separately so you can see where the money is going. Finishing passes are the lever buyers most often underestimate: each one is a separate run through the line.

Can I see a sample first?

Yes. We can send a plain unprinted sample so you can check the fit and structure, or a printed prototype for colour and finish. Sample costs are normally credited against the production order. A plain sample answers fit and structure; a printed one answers colour. On custom tote bags it is usually fit that is worth checking first.
