The build detail that decides flat display boxes

Lip height is a sight-line decision as much as a retention one. Check it from standing height.

Flat Display Boxes are engineered from corrugated or paperboard with a tear-away front or open face, so the pack doubles as the shelf unit once it reaches the store.

What flat display boxes have to cope with

Flat Display Boxes hold product in a shallow tray displayed at or near counter level. That is the starting point for the specification, because lip height is a sight-line decision as much as a retention one. Check it from standing height.

In service they are used for counters and low shelves where product is viewed from above at an angle.

Where flat display boxes are actually used

Flat Display Boxes are specified for counters and low shelves where product is viewed from above at an angle. Lip height is a sight-line decision as much as a retention one. Check it from standing height.

    • Counters and low shelves where product is viewed from above at an angle
    • Checkout counter placement
    • Aisle end caps
    • Trade shows and pop-ups

    Presentation on the shelf

Shelf presence is decided at arm's length, not close up. Contrast, the front panel hierarchy and how the pack sits next to competitors matter more than a finish that only reads in the hand.

If flat display boxes will be faced on a shelf, tell us the facing orientation so the strongest panel is the one the customer sees.

The substrate for flat display boxes

A shallow tray with a graded base, and a lip low enough to see over.

The options we would consider for this format are below; lip height is a sight-line decision as much as a retention one. Check it from standing height.

    • E-flute corrugated
    • B-flute corrugated
    • Litho-laminated corrugated
    • Heavy paperboard

How flat display boxes fail, and what prevents it

The front lip is too high and customers cannot see the product from a standing position.

Lip height is a sight-line decision as much as a retention one. Check it from standing height.

    Sizing flat display boxes

Shallow with a low front lip, so product is visible and reachable from above.

Send the contents rather than a box size. Lip height is set to retain product, without checking the sight line from where a customer actually stands.

    Finishing flat display boxes

The inner base is visible between products and is worth printing on a shallow display.

Every finish listed here is its own pass through the line, so each one is priced on its own rather than folded into a single figure.

    • Gloss lamination
    • Matte lamination
    • Spot UV on the header
    • Flood colour

    Testing the fit first

We can produce a plain unprinted sample so you can check the fit and structure of flat display boxes before committing.

Sample costs are normally credited against the production order.

    Ordering flat display boxes

Send the product dimensions, the quantity and your deadline. What comes back is a board grade, a structure, a print method, a lead time and a written price — not a number on its own.

You approve the quote, we send the dieline, prepress proofs it, and production follows. The proof stage is where changes are still free.

Flat Display Boxes: questions buyers ask

Specification, minimums and lead times for flat display boxes.

How does a shelf-ready case open?

Along a designed perforation, which is the hardest part of the structure to get right. Too weak and it fails in transit; too strong and store staff tear it badly. It is decided at dieline stage, and we recommend a sample before committing.

Do I need to match a retailer specification?

If you are supplying a grocery chain, almost certainly. Case dimensions, pallet pattern and barcode placement are usually published and non-negotiable. Send the requirement and we will design inward from it.

Can the display hold its shape when full?

That is a structural calculation rather than a hope. Send the weight of a full facing and we will grade the board and add reinforcement where the load actually sits, which is usually the base and the front lip.

Can I see a sample first?

Yes. We can send a plain unprinted sample so you can check the fit and structure, or a printed prototype for colour and finish. Sample costs are normally credited against the production order. Load a sample to a full facing before approving it. A display that holds its shape empty can still bow under stock.

Can you match packaging we already use?

Send the current specification or a physical sample and we will quote to match it rather than proposing an alternative you would then have to re-approve internally. A physical sample tells us more than a specification sheet — board caliper and coating are usually described loosely and measured exactly.

      Where do you deliver?

All 50 US states, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, on the same timeline everywhere: 3 to 5 business days of production after artwork approval, then 5 to 7 business days in transit. Every run is made to order and shipped directly to your address rather than pulled from stock, so you receive current production rather than whatever has been sitting in a warehouse. Freight is costed separately by weight, volume and destination. Tell us at quoting if the delivery point cannot take a pallet, and we will break the consignment into cartons instead.

Can I order flat display boxes in a custom size?

Every run is cut to your dimensions — there are no stock sizes here. Send the product measurements rather than a box size and we will build the display box around them, then send a dieline template you can design onto.

What happens after I approve the quote?

We issue a dieline template sized to your product, prepress checks your artwork against it, and a proof comes back for sign-off. Nothing runs until you approve that proof, and display boxes then take 3 to 5 business days.

Can you hold the specification for repeat orders?

Yes. Once a first run is approved we hold the board, structure, dimensions, print method and finishes against your account, so a reorder references the same specification exactly rather than being re-derived. It also means a reorder can be priced against a larger quantity without re-opening the specification.

Do you offer recycled or recyclable options?

Recycled grades are available across most of the substrates we run for display boxes. Recycled content, kerbside recyclability and certified compostability are three different claims though, so tell us which one you intend to print.

What file format should I send artwork in?

A print-ready PDF or a vector file, with fonts outlined and any raster images at 300 dpi at final size. We supply the dieline to design onto, and prepress checks bleed, safe area and crease clearance before issuing a proof. The dieline we supply carries the crease positions, so keeping type clear of a crease is easier to solve at layout than at proof.

What is the minimum order for flat display boxes?

A flat 100 units on any format. Most display boxes in this range are quoted from 100 units upward because unit cost falls sharply above that, but the minimum exists so you can validate a structure first.
