The build detail that decides retail display boxes

There is a narrow window between a perforation that survives transit and one that tears cleanly. Sample it.

Retail Display Boxes are engineered from corrugated or paperboard with a tear-away front or open face, so the pack doubles as the shelf unit once it reaches the store.

What retail display boxes have to cope with

Retail Display Boxes hold a facing of product on a shelf, arriving as a case and opening into the display. That is the starting point for the specification, because there is a narrow window between a perforation that survives transit and one that tears cleanly. Sample it.

In service they are used for grocery and pharmacy shelves where store staff open cases at speed during replenishment.

Where retail display boxes are actually used

Retail Display Boxes are specified for grocery and pharmacy shelves where store staff open cases at speed during replenishment. There is a narrow window between a perforation that survives transit and one that tears cleanly. Sample it.

    • Checkout counter placement
    • Aisle end caps
    • Trade shows and pop-ups

    Presentation on the shelf

Shelf presence is decided at arm's length, not close up. Contrast, the front panel hierarchy and how the pack sits next to competitors matter more than a finish that only reads in the hand.

If retail display boxes will be faced on a shelf, tell us the facing orientation so the strongest panel is the one the customer sees.

The substrate for retail display boxes

E-flute with a tested perforation profile, graded for the weight of a full facing.

The options we would consider for this format are below; there is a narrow window between a perforation that survives transit and one that tears cleanly. Sample it.

    • E-flute corrugated
    • B-flute corrugated
    • Litho-laminated corrugated
    • Heavy paperboard

How retail display boxes fail, and what prevents it

The perforation tears raggedly in store, leaving a display that looks damaged on its first day.

    Sizing retail display boxes

Set by the retailer's shelf depth and the product facing, not by what the brand would prefer.

Send the contents rather than a box size. The perforation is approved from a drawing, when it is the one element that has to be felt to be judged.

    Finishing retail display boxes

Print the faces staff see during replenishment as well as the customer-facing panel.

Finishes are costed one at a time because each is a separate operation — that way you can see which one is carrying the price.

    • Gloss lamination
    • Matte lamination
    • Spot UV on the header
    • Flood colour

    Checking it before you commit

We can produce a plain unprinted sample so you can check the fit and structure of retail display boxes before committing.

Sample costs are normally credited against the production order.

    Ordering retail display boxes

Send the product dimensions, the quantity and your deadline. What comes back is a board grade, a structure, a print method, a lead time and a written price — not a number on its own.

You approve the quote, we send the dieline, prepress proofs it, and production follows. The proof stage is where changes are still free.

      Answers

Ordering retail display boxes: the usual questions

Specification, minimums and lead times for retail display boxes.

How do I know the perforation will work?

By feeling a physical sample. It is the one part of a display case that cannot be judged from a drawing — too weak and it opens in transit, too strong and staff tear it badly.

How does a shelf-ready case open?

Along a designed perforation, which is the hardest part of the structure to get right. Too weak and it fails in transit; too strong and store staff tear it badly. It is decided at dieline stage, and we recommend a sample before committing.

Do I need to match a retailer specification?

If you are supplying a grocery chain, almost certainly. Case dimensions, pallet pattern and barcode placement are usually published and non-negotiable. Send the requirement and we will design inward from it.

Can the display hold its shape when full?

That is a structural calculation rather than a hope. Send the weight of a full facing and we will grade the board and add reinforcement where the load actually sits, which is usually the base and the front lip.

      Where do you deliver?

All 50 US states, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, on the same timeline everywhere: 3 to 5 business days of production after artwork approval, then 5 to 7 business days in transit. Every run is made to order and shipped directly to your address rather than pulled from stock, so you receive current production rather than whatever has been sitting in a warehouse. Freight is costed separately by weight, volume and destination. Tell us at quoting if the delivery point cannot take a pallet, and we will break the consignment into cartons instead.

Can I order retail display boxes in a custom size?

Every run is cut to your dimensions — there are no stock sizes here. Send the product measurements rather than a box size and we will build the display box around them, then send a dieline template you can design onto.

What happens after I approve the quote?

We issue a dieline template sized to your product, prepress checks your artwork against it, and a proof comes back for sign-off. Nothing runs until you approve that proof, and display boxes then take 3 to 5 business days.

Can you hold the specification for repeat orders?

Yes. Once a first run is approved we hold the board, structure, dimensions, print method and finishes against your account, so a reorder references the same specification exactly rather than being re-derived. It also means a reorder can be priced against a larger quantity without re-opening the specification.

Do you offer recycled or recyclable options?

Recycled grades are available across most of the substrates we run for display boxes. Recycled content, kerbside recyclability and certified compostability are three different claims though, so tell us which one you intend to print.

What file format should I send artwork in?

A print-ready PDF or a vector file, with fonts outlined and any raster images at 300 dpi at final size. We supply the dieline to design onto, and prepress checks bleed, safe area and crease clearance before issuing a proof. The dieline we supply carries the crease positions, so keeping type clear of a crease is easier to solve at layout than at proof.

What is the minimum order for retail display boxes?

A flat 100 units on any format. Most display boxes in this range are quoted from 100 units upward because unit cost falls sharply above that, but the minimum exists so you can validate a structure first.

How long do retail display boxes take to produce?

3 to 5 business days after artwork approval, plus freight. Display box runs with applied finishes can take longer because each finish is a separate pass, and we confirm a firm date in writing with the quote.
