The build detail that decides ring boxes

Slot width has to be specified against band width. It is the one measurement in this category that decides whether the box works.

Ring Boxes are built from greyboard wrapped in a printed or specialty paper, assembled by hand so the walls stay rigid and the lid holds its shape.

What ring boxes have to cope with

Ring Boxes hold a single ring held upright in a slot, where the slot has to match the band. That is the starting point for the specification, because slot width has to be specified against band width. It is the one measurement in this category that decides whether the box works.

In service they are used for proposals and wedding retail, where the box is opened in front of someone and the moment does not get a second take.

Where ring boxes are actually used

Ring Boxes are specified for proposals and wedding retail, where the box is opened in front of someone and the moment does not get a second take. Slot width has to be specified against band width. It is the one measurement in this category that decides whether the box works.

    • Proposals and wedding retail, where the box is opened in front of someone and the moment does not get a second take
    • Luxury retail and gifting
    • Jewellery and watch presentation
    • Premium electronics

    Holding the contents in place

Where a product needs to be held still, a fitted insert cut to its profile does more for damage rates than a heavier outer board. It usually costs less too, because you can drop a grade on the outer.

    • Magnetic closure
    • Ribbon pull
    • Foam insert
    • Fabric lining
    • Grosgrain ribbon tie

    The substrate for ring boxes

Rigid board with a sprung slotted pillow, since a hinged rigid lid is part of what the moment expects.

The options we would consider for this format are below; slot width has to be specified against band width. It is the one measurement in this category that decides whether the box works.

    • 1200gsm greyboard with printed wrap
    • 1400gsm greyboard
    • Specialty textured wrap paper
    • Linen-finish wrap
    • Soft-touch laminated wrap

    Sizing ring boxes

Small and near-cubic, around 2 × 2 × 1.75 in, with the depth set by the height of the pillow rather than by the ring.

Send the contents rather than a box size. One slot width is ordered for a range that runs from a 2 mm wedding band to an 8 mm signet, and no single slot fits both.

    Finishing ring boxes

A clean hinge and a lid that stays open matter more than the printing. The box is held open one-handed for a long moment.

Every finish listed here is its own pass through the line, so each one is priced on its own rather than folded into a single figure.

    • Foil stamping
    • Embossing
    • Debossing
    • Soft-touch lamination
    • Spot UV
    • Edge painting

    Proofing before the run

Foil, soft-touch and deboss all read differently in person than on a screen, so we recommend a printed prototype rather than a digital proof alone for anything finish-led.

Sample costs are normally credited against the production order.

    How an order runs

Start with dimensions and quantity. If you already run something similar, a physical sample tells us more in a minute than a specification does in a page.

A dieline template follows, then a proof. For finish-led work we usually recommend a physical prototype at this point, because foil and soft-touch do not read accurately on screen.

      In practice

Why it is built this way

      Sized to the contents

Small and near-cubic, around 2 × 2 × 1.75 in, with the depth set by the height of the pillow rather than by the ring.

      What tends to go wrong

The ring is either gripped so tightly that the band marks, or so loosely that it falls out when the box is opened at an angle.

      What it is specified for

Specified for proposals and wedding retail, where the box is opened in front of someone and the moment does not get a second take.

      The detail that decides it

Slot width has to be specified against band width. It is the one measurement in this category that decides whether the box works.

      Answers

      Ring Boxes: questions buyers ask

Specification, minimums and lead times for ring boxes.

Will one ring box fit my whole range?

The outer box will; the pillow slot will not. Tell us the narrowest and widest band you sell and we will normally specify two slot widths behind one identical exterior — the customer sees one box, and both rings are held properly.

Will this work as a shipper as well as a gift box?

Rarely without compromise. A box built to present is not built to survive a carrier network alone. A presentation box inside a plain protective outer usually costs less overall than one box trying to do both.

Why do rigid boxes cost more than folding cartons?

Because they are hand-assembled rather than machine-glued, and because the wrap, corner finish and interior lining are each separate operations. They also ship assembled rather than flat, which raises freight. The trade is a structure that feels substantially different in the hand.

Which finishes are worth the money at low quantity?

Ones that read from arm’s length. Soft-touch lamination and deboss change how the whole pack reads; a small foil detail often does not survive the distance between shelf and eye. We quote each pass separately so you can judge.

      Do rigid boxes ship assembled?

Yes, which is part of why their freight cost is higher than a folding carton. Collapsible rigid constructions exist and ship flatter, at some cost to the feel of the finished box.

Can I see a sample first?

Yes. We can send a plain unprinted sample so you can check the fit and structure, or a printed prototype for colour and finish. Sample costs are normally credited against the production order. Ask for the printed prototype rather than the plain sample if the question is finish — soft-touch, foil and deboss all read differently in the hand than on a screen.

Can you match packaging we already use?

Send the current specification or a physical sample and we will quote to match it rather than proposing an alternative you would then have to re-approve internally. Send the physical box rather than a photograph. Wrap stock, corner finish and interior lining are what make a rigid box feel the way it does, and none of them photograph.

      Where do you deliver?

All 50 US states, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, on the same timeline everywhere: 3 to 5 business days of production after artwork approval, then 5 to 7 business days in transit. Every run is made to order and shipped directly to your address rather than pulled from stock, so you receive current production rather than whatever has been sitting in a warehouse. Freight is costed separately by weight, volume and destination. Rigid boxes ship assembled rather than flat, so they take considerably more space in transit than a folding carton of the same finished size. It is worth factoring into the landed cost.

Can I order ring boxes in a custom size?

Every run is cut to your dimensions — there are no stock sizes here. Send the product measurements rather than a box size and we will build the rigid box around them, then send a dieline template you can design onto.

What happens after I approve the quote?

We issue a dieline template sized to your product, prepress checks your artwork against it, and a proof comes back for sign-off. Nothing runs until you approve that proof, and rigid boxes then take 3 to 5 business days.

Can you hold the specification for repeat orders?

Yes. Once a first run is approved we hold the board, structure, dimensions, print method and finishes against your account, so a reorder references the same specification exactly rather than being re-derived. That includes the ink formulation, which is what keeps a brand colour consistent between runs rather than drifting a shade each time.

Do you offer recycled or recyclable options?

Recycled grades are available across most of the substrates we run for rigid boxes. Recycled content, kerbside recyclability and certified compostability are three different claims though, so tell us which one you intend to print.
