What blush boxes have to cope with

Blush Boxes hold a pressed powder compact, usually round and often with a mirror. That is the starting point for the specification, because round products in square cartons need a locating insert, or they rotate and abrade against the corners.

In service they are used for beauty retail where the compact itself is a visible, finished object.

    Presentation on the shelf

Shelf presence is decided at arm's length, not close up. Contrast, the front panel hierarchy and how the pack sits next to competitors matter more than a finish that only reads in the hand.

If blush boxes will be faced on a shelf, tell us the facing orientation so the strongest panel is the one the customer sees.

Where blush boxes are actually used

Blush Boxes are specified for beauty retail where the compact itself is a visible, finished object. Round products in square cartons need a locating insert, or they rotate and abrade against the corners.

    • Beauty retail where the compact itself is a visible, finished object
    • Shelf display in specialty retail
    • Subscription and gift sets
    • E-commerce inner packaging

    The substrate for blush boxes

16pt SBS with a simple board insert to locate a round compact.

The options we would consider for this format are below; round products in square cartons need a locating insert, or they rotate and abrade against the corners.

    • 12pt SBS paperboard
    • 14pt SBS paperboard
    • 16pt SBS paperboard
    • 18pt kraft board
    • recycled CCNB board

    Printing blush boxes

Shade swatches printed on the carton help customers choose, and they must be printed accurately or they mislead.

Offset lithography, Digital press, Flexography are all available for this format. Run length usually decides which is cheapest: digital removes the plate cost on short quantities, offset and flexo overtake it at volume.

    Finishing blush boxes

Finishing is applied in the same production run, so stock is not shipped between vendors.

The finishes below are quoted line by line. Each is an additional pass, so dropping one is a real saving rather than a rounding difference.

    • Gloss lamination
    • Matte lamination
    • Soft-touch lamination
    • Spot UV
    • Foil stamping
    • Embossing
    • Debossing
    • Aqueous coating

    Sizing blush boxes

Shallow and square or round-cornered, sized to the compact diameter plus minimal clearance.

Send the contents rather than a box size. A square carton is chosen for cost and the round compact inside it moves freely, scuffing on the way to the shelf.

    Getting artwork press-ready

Supply artwork on the dieline we send you, with 3 mm bleed past every trim edge and all text held 4 mm inside the fold lines.

Supply a print-ready PDF or vector file with fonts outlined and images at 300 dpi. Our prepress team checks every file before a proof is issued. The check that catches most files is type sitting too close to a crease, which is easier to move at layout than at proof.

    How an order runs

Tell us what goes inside, how many you need and when. Those three answers are enough for us to specify and price the job properly.

A dieline template follows, sized to your product. Prepress checks your artwork against it and issues a proof; nothing runs until you sign that off.

    Checking it before you commit

Foil, soft-touch and deboss all read differently in person than on a screen, so we recommend a printed prototype rather than a digital proof alone for anything finish-led.

Sample costs are normally credited against the production order.

Choosing a style for custom blush boxes

Most blush compacts are shallow and round, so the box style decides how much the product moves and how the brand reads at the counter. The four routes below cover nearly every blush launch we quote, from a drugstore single to a boxed gift set.

If you are unsure, start with the tuck-end carton and an insert. It is the lowest unit cost, it ships flat, and it still gives you a full front panel for the shade name and swatch.

For the insert itself, our guide to packaging inserts explains how cut-out depth and board grade change the way a compact sits.

    StyleBest forWhat to watch
Tuck-end carton with board insertSingle compacts on a retail shelf or a beauty counterSize the insert cut-out to the compact hinge, not the lid
Window cartonShowing the actual shade through a clear compact lidKeep the window away from the tuck flap and the box edges
Sleeve over a trayPremium singles and influencer kitsAllow for the sleeve thickness when sizing the tray
Two-piece rigid boxGift sets and heavier metal or mirrored compactsHigher unit cost and more freight volume, since it does not ship flat

Printing blush boxes for a full shade range

Blush is bought on color, so the swatch on the box is a promise. A customer who picks a coral from the carton and opens a pink compact returns it. That is why we treat the swatch panel as its own print decision, separate from the rest of the artwork.

For a range of six shades or more, keep the structure, the insert and the main layout identical and change only the shade panel. You approve one dieline, one insert and one master design, and each shade becomes a small artwork change rather than a new job.

Short runs per shade usually print digitally, which avoids paying for new plates on every color. Longer runs on best-selling shades can move to offset, with a spot ink for the swatch so it holds from one reorder to the next.

The trade-offs between the two press routes are set out in digital versus offset printing for packaging, including where the cost lines cross.

Matching blush boxes to the rest of a makeup line

Blush rarely launches alone. It usually sits next to a bronzer, a highlighter and an eyeshadow palette, and buyers notice quickly when the cartons look like they came from four suppliers. Using the same board, the same finish and the same type layout across the line makes the brand read as one family on the shelf.

If the compacts are sold together as a set, a single outer box with a multi-cavity insert usually costs less than four printed singles inside a plain shipper, and it gives you one more panel to brand.

When you plan the set, look at our custom makeup boxes for gift sets to see how a multi-product outer is specified.

      Answers

      Blush Boxes: questions buyers ask

Specification, minimums and lead times for blush boxes.

How do I measure a blush compact for its box?

Measure the compact closed, across its widest point, which on most round compacts is the hinge rather than the lid. Then measure the depth with the clasp shut. Send us those two numbers, or better still a sample compact, and we size the carton and the insert cut-out around it with only a millimeter or two of play.

Does a round blush compact need an insert inside a square box?

Almost always. Without one the compact turns every time the carton is handled, and the corners of the box rub the lid until it looks used. A single board insert with a round cut-out holds it in place and adds very little to the unit cost, because it is die-cut on the same press run as the carton.

Can you print the blush shade accurately on the box?

Yes, but it has to be planned. A shade printed in CMYK can drift from one run to the next, so for a shade swatch we usually recommend a spot ink matched to your color reference. Check the swatch on a printed prototype under shop lighting, not on a screen proof, before you approve the run.

Can a blush box have a window so the shade shows through?

It can. We die-cut the window over the pan and back it with clear film so dust stays out. Keep the window clear of the box edges and the tuck flap, because board near a window is weaker, and if the compact has an opaque lid the window only works when the pan is visible through a clear lid.

Which board weight suits a blush compact with a mirror?

16pt SBS handles most plastic compacts with a small mirror. A heavier metal or glass-lidded compact is better in 18pt board, or in a rigid two-piece box if it is a gift or prestige item. The mirror is the fragile part, so the insert matters more than the outer board weight.

Can one blush box design cover a whole shade range?

Yes. Most brands keep one structure and one layout and change only the shade name, number and swatch panel. That keeps a single dieline and a single insert for the whole range, and digital printing makes the per-shade artwork changes affordable on short runs.

Can you make boxes for cream blush, blush sticks or liquid blush?

Yes. The same carton style works for cream blush pots, twist-up blush sticks and liquid blush bottles. Only the internal size and the insert change, so tell us which format each shade comes in when you ask for a quote and we size each one to its container.

How much panel space do ingredient lists need for blush boxes?

More than most brands allow for. Ingredient copy and any warnings compete directly with the design, and adding them late usually forces a reflow. We block the area on the dieline before you commit design time.

Do blush boxes arrive flat or assembled?

Flat and glued along one seam, so they pop open on your packing line. That keeps freight cost down considerably compared with a pre-assembled structure.

Are recycled or recyclable blush boxes available?

Recycled grades are available across most of the substrates we run for folding cartons. Recycled content, curbside recyclability and certified compostability are three different claims though, so tell us which one you intend to print.

What file format should blush boxes artwork be in?

A print-ready PDF or a vector file, with fonts outlined and any raster images at 300 dpi at final size. We supply the dieline to design onto, and prepress checks bleed, safe area and crease clearance before issuing a proof. The dieline we supply carries the crease positions, so keeping type clear of a crease is easier to solve at layout than at proof.

What is the minimum order for blush boxes?

A flat 100 units on any format. Most folding cartons in this range are quoted from 100 units upward because unit cost falls sharply above that, but the minimum exists so you can validate a structure first.

How long do blush boxes take to produce?

3 to 5 business days after artwork approval, plus freight. Folding carton runs with applied finishes can take longer because each finish is a separate pass, and we confirm a firm date in writing with the quote.

      What do blush boxes cost?

Ordered online, blush boxes start from $0.30 per unit on our standard build, with free shipping to the US, UK, Canada and Australia. For special sizes, materials or large runs we quote, and for this format the biggest levers are quantity, print route, board grade and how many finishing passes are involved. Finishing passes are the lever buyers most often underestimate: each one is a separate run through the line.

Can I see a sample of blush boxes first?

Yes. We can send a plain unprinted sample so you can check the fit and structure, or a printed prototype for color and finish. Sample costs are normally credited against the production order. Ask for the printed prototype rather than the plain sample if the question is finish — soft-touch, foil and deboss all read differently in the hand than on a screen.
