The build detail that decides shelf ready display boxes

Retailer specifications are fixed. Design inward from them rather than outward from your product.

Shelf Ready Display Boxes are engineered from corrugated or paperboard with a tear-away front or open face, so the pack doubles as the shelf unit once it reaches the store.

What shelf ready display boxes have to cope with

Shelf Ready Display Boxes hold product in a case designed to go straight onto a shelf without unpacking. That is the starting point for the specification, because retailer specifications are fixed. Design inward from them rather than outward from your product.

In service they are used for grocery supply where the retailer publishes non-negotiable case requirements.

Where shelf ready display boxes are actually used

Shelf Ready Display Boxes are specified for grocery supply where the retailer publishes non-negotiable case requirements. Retailer specifications are fixed. Design inward from them rather than outward from your product.

    • Grocery supply where the retailer publishes non-negotiable case requirements
    • Checkout counter placement
    • Aisle end caps
    • Trade shows and pop-ups

    Presentation on the shelf

Shelf presence is decided at arm's length, not close up. Contrast, the front panel hierarchy and how the pack sits next to competitors matter more than a finish that only reads in the hand.

If shelf ready display boxes will be faced on a shelf, tell us the facing orientation so the strongest panel is the one the customer sees.

The substrate for shelf ready display boxes

To the published requirement — case dimensions, opening face, barcode placement and stacking strength.

The options we would consider for this format are below; retailer specifications are fixed. Design inward from them rather than outward from your product.

    • E-flute corrugated
    • B-flute corrugated
    • Litho-laminated corrugated
    • Heavy paperboard

How shelf ready display boxes fail, and what prevents it

The case does not meet a published retailer requirement and is rejected at the distribution centre.

Retailer specifications are fixed. Design inward from them rather than outward from your product.

    Sizing shelf ready display boxes

Dictated by the retailer's published case specification and pallet pattern.

Send the contents rather than a box size. The case is designed around the product and the retailer specification is consulted afterwards.

    Finishing shelf ready display boxes

Barcode placement is specified by the retailer and must not cross a crease or perforation.

The finishes below are quoted line by line. Each is an additional pass, so dropping one is a real saving rather than a rounding difference.

    • Gloss lamination
    • Matte lamination
    • Spot UV on the header
    • Flood colour

    Testing the fit first

Ask for an unprinted sample if the question is fit, or a printed prototype if the question is colour. They answer different things.

Sample costs are normally credited against the production order.

    From enquiry to delivery

The useful starting point is the product, not the pack. Give us its measurements and the quantity, and we work the display box outward from there.

You approve the quote, we send the dieline, prepress proofs it, and production follows. The proof stage is where changes are still free.

      Answers

Ordering shelf ready display boxes: the usual questions

Specification, minimums and lead times for shelf ready display boxes.

Can you build to a supermarket case specification?

Yes — send the published requirement and we design inward from it. Retailer specifications are non-negotiable, so we treat them as the fixed constraint rather than proposing alternatives.

How does a shelf-ready case open?

Along a designed perforation, which is the hardest part of the structure to get right. Too weak and it fails in transit; too strong and store staff tear it badly. It is decided at dieline stage, and we recommend a sample before committing.

Do I need to match a retailer specification?

If you are supplying a grocery chain, almost certainly. Case dimensions, pallet pattern and barcode placement are usually published and non-negotiable. Send the requirement and we will design inward from it.

Can the display hold its shape when full?

That is a structural calculation rather than a hope. Send the weight of a full facing and we will grade the board and add reinforcement where the load actually sits, which is usually the base and the front lip.

What happens after I approve the quote?

We issue a dieline template sized to your product, prepress checks your artwork against it, and a proof comes back for sign-off. Nothing runs until you approve that proof, and display boxes then take 3 to 5 business days.

Can you hold the specification for repeat orders?

Yes. Once a first run is approved we hold the board, structure, dimensions, print method and finishes against your account, so a reorder references the same specification exactly rather than being re-derived. It also means a reorder can be priced against a larger quantity without re-opening the specification.

Do you offer recycled or recyclable options?

Recycled grades are available across most of the substrates we run for display boxes. Recycled content, kerbside recyclability and certified compostability are three different claims though, so tell us which one you intend to print.

What file format should I send artwork in?

A print-ready PDF or a vector file, with fonts outlined and any raster images at 300 dpi at final size. We supply the dieline to design onto, and prepress checks bleed, safe area and crease clearance before issuing a proof. The dieline we supply carries the crease positions, so keeping type clear of a crease is easier to solve at layout than at proof.

What is the minimum order for shelf ready display boxes?

A flat 100 units on any format. Most display boxes in this range are quoted from 100 units upward because unit cost falls sharply above that, but the minimum exists so you can validate a structure first.

How long do shelf ready display boxes take to produce?

3 to 5 business days after artwork approval, plus freight. Display box runs with applied finishes can take longer because each finish is a separate pass, and we confirm a firm date in writing with the quote.

What do shelf ready display boxes cost?

Prices start from $0.30 per piece for large-volume orders. For this format the biggest levers are quantity, print route, board grade and how many finishing passes are involved. We quote each element separately so you can see where the money is going. Finishing passes are the lever buyers most often underestimate: each one is a separate run through the line.

Can I see a sample first?

Yes. We can send a plain unprinted sample so you can check the fit and structure, or a printed prototype for colour and finish. Sample costs are normally credited against the production order. Load a sample to a full facing before approving it. A display that holds its shape empty can still bow under stock.
